The FreeLancers 2016 NBA All-Star Roster

Fan voting is a great way to keep fans involved in the game and give their input to the game like analysts, commentators and writers do so often. However, every year there is always one or two players who get snubbed from playing in the midseason spectacle, in large part because many fans view it as a popularity contest. That’s not to say that players such as Kobe Bryant and Kyrie Irving aren’t spectacular players, but the all-star roster should be a reflection of players who have actually played and dominated so far this season.

The Freelancers present to you the list of the most deserving players who should be playing in Toronto for the 2016 All-Star game come February:

WESTERN CONFERENCE

STARTING BACKCOURT:

Stephen Curry



To no surprise Steph Curry is 2nd in All-Star votes behind the great Kobe Bryant, and his offensive marksmanship has been nothing short of fantastic to watch. This gunslinger is the greatest offensive threat in the world and he leads the league in almost every offensive category. He is tops in scoring (29.9), 3 pointers made (186), field goals made (387), PER (31.7), win shares (9.1), and his true shooting, which is off the charts (.674). The reigning MVP is looking like your everyday 2k MyPlayer, and will put on a show in Toronto

Russell Westbrook



What Westbrook has done this season is awe inspiring to say the least. Not only has he passed the ball more, but he is as efficient as he’s ever been. He ranks second in PER with 29.4, and he is second in assists with 405 (9.6 per game). Even with Kevin Durant at his side, Westbrook continues to put up gargantuan numbers all over the board. Did I mention that he also leads the league in steals with over 100? Yea, this freak of nature and MVP candidate will be tough to stop when he’s paired with Steph Curry in February

STARTING FRONTCOURT:

Kawhi Leonard



There is actually a chance that Leonard will not be starting in the actual All-Star game. Wow. The silent assassin should not only be starting, but should be heavily involved in the MVP conversation. The 2014 Finals MVP and 2015 Defensive player of the year has made the necessary strides offensively to surge the San Antonio Spurs to a dominant 36-6 record and 24-0 at home. Leonard is boasting career highs in almost every category, such as points (20.1), field goal percentage (50.6%), 3-point percentage (48%), free throw percentage (87%) and player efficiency rating (25.7). Leonard has quietly emerged as the best two-way player in the league and should absolutely be starting in this year’s all-star game and not on the bench.

Kevin Durant



As Desared Calaku noted, Kevin Durant has come from “MVP to afterthought” when we look at this year’s MVP conversation or when we debate who are the top three players in this league. Not long ago Kevin Durant was taking the world by storm much like Curry is doing today with consecutive scoring titles. With impeccable combinations of size, speed and touch, I still believe Durant is the best offensive player in the game. In the 35 games that he’s played, after missing 55 games last season, Durant is looking like his old self with averages of 26.5 ppg (good for 3rd in the league), 7.7 rpg and 4.4 apg. He is also putting forth the consistent ‘50-40-90’ in field goals, 3-pointers and free throws. Additionally, he ranks 3rd in PER with 28.3. This is the same guy that once averaged 32 points on a nightly basis back in 2014. As Durant continues to get accustomed with his team, we are just ecstatic that we get to witness greatness again.

DeMarcus Cousins



Make no mistake, this is the best big man in the league and certainly in the Western conference. It may not reflect in the King’s overall record but the Kings went 2-9 in the games that he’s missed this season. They are on the verge of the #8 seed in the West which counts as doing something right in my book. Add in the fact that this is only the first year getting accustomed with Rondo and Cauley-Stein. But as an individual, Cousins impacts the game like no other center. He ranks 4th in ppg (25.9), 5th in rebounds per game (11.1) and shoots over 50% from the floor. He’s even expanded his range to the 3-point line, though it isn’t quite effective, it is growing at 34%. In a class of his own, Boogie Cousins should be the starting center for the Western conference.

RESERVE BACKCOURT:

James Harden



The runner-up for MVP in 2015 has continued to shoulder the offensive load for the Houston Rockets. The Lil B curse may have been lifted, at least for now, as he’s putting up the same numbers he did last season. The Beard is averaging about 27.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 6.7 apg. However he’s producing at a much lower rate this year, only shooting 42% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc while chucking up over 19 shots. His defense has also been very pedestrian at best. Still, Harden is one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers and continues on his all-star path.

Chris Paul



CP3 is putting the Clippers on his back, especially with Blake Griffin missing extended time. The savvy floor general is still among the leaders in assists and steals with 9.6 and 2.1, respectively. He remains a top 3 point guard in this league and a perennial all-star.

FRONTCOURT

Draymond Green



You can make the case for Green to be a starter in this year’s all-star game, and at this rate he probably will. The versatile big man is the most impactful player not named Steph Curry. He is far and beyond leading the league in triple-doubles this season, with a whopping 9 triple-doubles through 41 games. Green grabs rebounds like a forward, passes like a point guard and shoots the spot-up 3 like his backcourt teammates. He ranks 6th among all players in assists with 7.4 per game and boasts a player efficiency rating of 24.2 which is good for 9th in the NBA.

DeAndre Jordan



The double-double machine is having another typical DeAndre Jordan season ranking 2nd in rebounds (13.5) and 3rd in blocks (2.4). There aren’t that many premier rim protectors in this league like DeAndre and continues to make his team a lot better on defense. His opponents shoot 3.4% lower than their average and has a defensive rating of 98 per 100 possessions. It’s still a shame that he is the worst free throw shooter in the league (41%), but there probably won’t be too many attempts at the all-star game. Phew.

Anthony Davis



The Brow has digressed a little bit in offensive production from last year, but he is still putting up monster numbers on a bad team. Alvin Gentry has encouraged Davis to shoot more threes, but that hasn’t really been a comfortable part of Davis’ game. He’s only shooting at 26.7% from beyond the arc and his field goal percentage has seen a dip from 53.5% to 48.6% (a career low). Nonetheless, Davis has been stuffing the stat sheets, corralling 10.5 rebounds per game and ranking 2nd in blocks with 2.5. Davis will soon be a top 3 player in this league, as he’s only 22 years old. It’s been a pleasure watching the former #1 overall pick blossom the way he as thus far.

OTHER RESERVES:

Rajon Rondo



The point guard maestro has returned to dropping dimes left and right. He’s far and away the best passer in the NBA with 11.6 assists per night. The Kentucky product is also 3rd in the league behind Westbrook and Draymond in triple-doubles with 4 this season. Looming in on the 8th seed in the Western conference, Rondo looks to lead his team to the 1st playoff berth since 2006 and make the all-star roster.

Klay Thompson



The Golden State Warriors are such a great, deep team. They will potentially have 3 starters play in this year’s All-Star game which hasn’t been done since the Lebron James-led Miami Heat in 2013. So yea, this is the new big 3. Klay Thompson is right behind his splash bro in 3 pointers made (126) and percentage (43%), while also proving to be a great two-way defender. Klay will make his second all-star appearance with averages of 20.6 ppg, 4 rpg and 2.5 apg.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

STARTING BACKCOURT

Kyle Lowry



Mr. Slim Thick is looking like the real 6 God over in Toronto. He is arguably the best point guard in the East right now and has led the Raptors to 26-15, good for 2nd in the East. The Philly native is averaging 21 ppg, 5 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.3 steals, with a career high in PER (23.2) Whatever Lowry’s diet is, I want to take part in it.

Jimmy Butler



The rising superstar is the new chosen one in Chicago, not Derrick Rose. Butler should absolutely be starting for the Eastern Conference, as he has proven to be the best 2-guard in the NBA - no it’s not James Harden. With career highs in both points (22.4) and assists (4.4) Jimmy Butler is the leader of this team and his one the best defensive players we have today. More importantly he leads the league in minutes played (38.2) and has played every game this season. This man is a juggernaut, he might actually need the rest during all-star weekend.

STARTING FRONTCOURT

LeBron James



This is pretty redundant, so I want go in too much on this. Lebron is still a top 3 player in this league and although his “best player in the world” title seem to be cloudy at this moment, no one can deny the impact he has on his team or the National Basketball Association

Paul George



What a comeback season it has been for PG13. After suffering a gruesome leg injury in 2014, Paul George has never looked better. He boasting career highs in points (23.7) and PER (20.7), and has done a superb job at playing the power forward position this season. He has yet to hit his ceiling, too, so it’s an even bigger testament to the hard work that George has put in after the injury.

Andre Drummond



What a force Drummond has been on the glass. He’s averaging over 15.5 rebounds a game, with 5.4 of them coming from the offensive glass. Only 5 times this season that a player posted a 20-point 20-rebound game, Drummond is responsible for 4 of those occasions. He is by far the best double-double threat in the league with 35, which 9 more than 2nd place Russell Westbrook. He also has a career high in points (17.6) and steals (1.7). You can definitely make a case for Drummond being the best center in the NBA.

RESERVE BACKCOURT

John Wall



In the extended absence of Bradley Beal, Wall has picked up the slack tremendously. One of the best passers in the game (9.7), Wall has also eclipsed his threshold for points with 20 ppg and is singlehandedly keeping the Wizards around respectability with a 500. record. However, he might have played a part in the decline as well, with passive defense and a drop in efficiency. There is a strong case for Wall being the starter, but it’s quite honestly a toss up, with the deciding factor being Toronto’s record versus Washington’s.

DeMar DeRozan



Straight outta Compton, DeRozan is one of the best 2-way players in the NBA. He has career highs in points, rebounds, assists and free throw percentage. He and Lowry form one the best backcourts in the league, so it will be fun seeing those two go to work in the All-Star game.

RESERVE FRONTCOURT

Paul Millsap



Paul Millsap is the Eastern Conference’s Draymond Green. The versatile forward is putting up great numbers across the board: 18.4 ppg, 8.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals, 1.2 blocks and 23.4 PER. Mr. Do It All helps Atlanta in so many different ways both with his defensive intuition and offensive playmaking.

Chris Bosh



Another candidate for comeback player of the year, if there was one, Bosh has returned to form since missing the entire 2014-15 season with a collapsed lung. He’s averaged 18.9 points and 8 rebounds to go along with a much improved defense. The post-LeBron era has proven to be difficult to overcome in terms of contending for another title, but it hasn’t stopped Bosh from producing at the all-star level he always has

Carmelo Anthony



Carmelo Anthony has finally found the motivation to play above-average defense and pass the ball more. It’s a miracle in the Square Garden. But while his offensive output and efficiency has digressed this season, he still remains a premier scorer in this league and can grab rebounds at a ferocious rate for a wing.

OTHER RESERVES

Isaiah Thomas



I cannot stress enough the difference in the Celtics offense when Thomas is on the court as opposed to when he sits. Boston has scored 105 points per 100 possessions with Thomas manning the point, and just 94.5 when he’s on the bench - a gap that relates to the Warriors with and without Steph Curry. The 5’9 point guard is putting forth 21.8 points a game and 6.6 assists while shooting over 89% from the charity stripe - a place he consistently gets to with about 7 attempts.

Dwyane Wade



Wade hasn’t caught the injury bug so far this season and he has made a solid case for taking part in this year’s All-Star contest. Averaging 18.3 ppg and over 4 assists and rebounds, Wade has kept the Miami Heat around the top of the Eastern Conference. While his athleticism continues to deteriorate, he is finding crafty maneuvers to get to the hole and score.

The FreeLancers 2016 NBA Big Board

This big board is sure to change as we approach the draft in June. With no team order set this is how I believe the players expected to enter the draft stack up to this point.

1. Ben Simmons (Freshman, SF/PF, LSU)

No introduction required here. Simmons has been as advertised and despite concerns over his lack of a jump shot, should be the overall top pick in June. Guard like mobility and handling with vision and passing ability that is being compared to Magic Johnson. All of this packed in a 6'10" frame, we could be looking at a generational talent.

2. Brandon Ingram (Freshman, SF, Duke)

What a consolation prize Brandon Ingram will make for whatever team falls just short in the Ben Simmons sweepstakes. Ingram has come on strong since the start of December averaging over 20 PPG. His length and shooting ability give Ingram the potential to be a 2-way star at the next level.

3. Kris Dunn (Junior, PG, Providence)

The cream of the crop when it comes to point guards in the upcoming draft, Kris Dunn is going to make teams rethink their guard situation. Elite size for a point guard at the next level, standing 6'4" with a 6'9" wingspan, Dunn could wreak havoc on the defensive end. The biggest question surrounding Dunn was his shooting ability but he has shown improvement shooting over 37% from beyond the arc this season.

4. Dragan Bender (18 y/o, PF, Croatia)

This years mystery man, Dragan Bender is already receiving comparisons to Kristaps Porzingis due to his jump shot and mobility at over 7 feet. Just like international players before him there comes a level of uncertainty but his upside is too high to pass up on.

5. Jaylen Brown (Freshman, SF, California)

A prototypical wing player, California's Jaylen Brown has shown the ability to get to the basket and finish with super athletic dunks and play high level defense. He'll need to improve his jump shot to be a true scoring threat but that potential is there.

6. Jamal Murray (Freshman, PG/SG, Kentucky)

Murray started the year somewhat inconsistent but has come on as the Wildcats' biggest scoring threat with the ability to play either guard position at the next level. Murray has shown he can score from anywhere on the court as well as superb athleticism. Consistency is key for Murray to become a star in the NBA.

7. Ivan Rabb (Freshman, PF, California)

Many scouts thought Rabb would be more of a project in his freshman season and get drafted based on his potential. On the contrary, Rabb has shown he can flat out play, averaging over 13 rebounds per 40 minutes. Rabb will probably have to put on some more muscle to be as effective at the next level but his 6'11" frame will allow him to do so.

8. Henry Ellenson (Freshman, PF, Marquette)

A true stretch 4, Ellenson has drawn comparisons to Kevin Love with his ability to knock down shots as well as bang down low for rebounds. His biggest test at the next level will be the ability to finish against length which he has struggled against.

9. Jakob Poeltl (Sophomore, C, Utah)

The top Center prospect in the upcoming draft is Utah's 7 foot Jakob Poeltl. The big man is considered a safe pick because of his athleticism and his ability to protect the rim. However, Poeltl has also been a very efficient scorer as his post moves have become more effective as well as being a very good offensive rebounder.

10. Buddy Hield (Senior, SG, Oklahoma)

Buddy is the best pure scorer in this years class showing he can fill it up against even the best teams when he scored 46 against Kansas. He has shown he can score efficiently from anywhere on the floor and has to be checked at all times. Teams are reluctant to draft Seniors very high, especially ones that are undersized, but for a team that needs points, Buddy could be their guy.

11. Wade Baldwin IV (Sophomore, PG, Vanderbilt)

Flying a little under the radar, Baldwin is now flying up draft boards and could very well be a top 10 pick come June. Baldwin has elite size standing 6'3" with a ridiculous 6'10" wingspan for his position. There are no real holes in Baldwin's game, he's an excellent defender as well as a high level shooter from deep.

12. Furkan Korkmaz (18 y/o, SG, Turkey)

Korkmaz has a lot of the same potential that got the Magic to take Mario Hezonja with the 5th pick in the last draft. However, Korkmaz needs more time to develop before he can really make an impact at the next level. A draft and stash is a possibility for whoever selects him.

13. Skal Labissiere (Freshman, PF/C, Kentucky)

Some mock drafts have started to take Skal completely off their boards in the belief that he will return to Kentucky for his Sophomore season. While Skal has been a major disappointment to this point the potential is still there. Foul trouble has been a huge problem for him as he needs to add more weight to be able to bang down low. Still, if he decides to forego his sophomore year Skal  won't slip past the lottery.

14. Deyonta Davis (Freshman, PF, Michigan State)

If you look at the numbers Davis may not jump at you as a lottery pick but like Karl-Anthony Towns last year, the numbers don't tell the whole story. Davis has a nose for the ball and has been a put back machine for the Spartans this year. Playing less than 20 minutes per game, Davis has double-double averages per 40.

15. Denzel Valentine (Senior, SG, Michigan State)

Valentine does it all for the Spartans and should be able to play multiple positions at the next level. Versatility is what will drive his draft stock due to his underwhelming athleticism. However, if his shooting stroke stays consistent, Valentine can be a nice fit for any team.

16. Timothe Luwawu  (20 y/o, SF, France)

Playing in the Adriatic league, Luwawu is one of the top scorers with the ability to guard multiple positions. He's had a very strong start to 2016 and should solidify himself as a mid round pick.

17. Cheick Diallo (Freshman, PF/C, Kansas)

A lot was expected of Diallo coming into his freshman year at Kansas. Although it hasn't been what he hoped for , Diallo has still been ultra effective when he gets in.

18. Stephen Zimmerman (Freshman, C, UNLV)

Another 7 footer, Zimmerman is going to need some time until he's fully NBA ready but the skills are there. Very athletic and can create his own shot as well as find open teammates. When he's on the floor the offense runs through him and he has really shown off his high upside.

19. Grayson Allen (Sophomore, SG, Duke)
Allen has exploded onto the scene this year as Duke's leading scorer. He's a little undersized for his position but thanks to his elite athleticism he can make up for what he lacks in height.

20. Diamond Stone (Freshman, C, Maryland)

Stone could really be a lot higher on this list if he was playing more. Lately, he's looked unstoppable ever since his 39 point outburst against Penn State. He has made the most of his minutes and if he decides to make the jump to the NBA, Stone could make for a steal.

21. Melo Trimble (Sophomore, PG, Maryland)

A big improvement from his freshman season for Trimble who is scoring and passing just as well. Turnovers have been a problem as of late but he does a very good job of setting his teammates up for easy buckets. He lacks the explosiveness that has become more common among PG's and is not the best defender which could really hurt him at the next level.

22. Caris LaVert (Senior, SG, Michigan)

LaVert has been plagued by injuries in college. Otherwise, he's a terrific player who has great size and length with the ability to fill it up from deep. If he can put the injuries behind him, LaVert could defy the expectations given to a senior taken outside of the lottery.

23. Dwayne Bacon (Freshman, SG/SF, Florida State)

His size allows him to play multiple positions and his athleticism allows him to compliment his outside scoring ability with inside scoring ability. He'll need to show he's not just one dimensional at the next level.

24. Demetrius Jackson (Junior, PG, Notre Dame)

Jackson won't "wow" you with his play but he has a knack for making the "right" play for his team. He has shown a great ability to shoot from deep as well as the mid-range. Size is a huge question moving forward for Jackson however as he stands just 6'1".

25. Brice Johnson (Senior, PF, North Carolina)

Johnson projects as a high energy guy at the next level but there are underrated parts to his game. Around the basket he is almost automatic with great leaping ability. Also, he has shown great touch from the free throw line which makes you think there is reason to hope for a consistent mid ranger jumper.

26. Damian Jones (Junior, C, Vanderbilt)
Already having declared for the draft, Jones is playing under a microscope and for him, consistency is really the key. He likes to play above the rim but has shown the potential to have a more all around offensive game in the future.

27. Taurean Prince (Senior, SF, Baylor)
Prince has legitimate potential to become a 3-and-D player at the next level. When he's on his game, Prince can be a real stat sheet stuffer as his playmaking ability has continued to produce.

28. Domantas Sabonis (Sophomore, PF, Gonzaga)
The problem with Sabonis is that he does not have an elite aspect to his game. Not a great athlete or shooter, Sabonis puts up his numbers but constantly being active and in the right spot. Could be worth a look for a team drafting in the later part of the first round.

29. Malik Newman (Freshman, PG/SG, Mississippi State)
A rough season for Newman who had lottery pick aspirations coming into the season. He hasn't been able to score very efficiently but has flashed potential that could make a team take a chance on him as a combo guard.

30. Pascal Siakam (Sophomore, PF, New Mexico State)
The numbers for Siakam are spectacular but the competition has been anything but. Still, his motor and hustle make you think he can find a fit somewhere.

The FreeLancers 2016 NFL Mock Draft 2.0

The NFL draft is more than 100 days away. These projections are sure to change. These picks have changed based on new coaching jobs post-black Monday.

1. Tennessee Titans- Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss
No change here at the number one spot. Other needs that Tennessee should try to address through free-agency or later in the draft, are at cornerback, runningback and wide receiver. No use in getting weapons on offense If Mariota won't be protected.

2. Cleveland Browns- Jared Goff, QB, California
The Browns have hired former Bengals OC Hue Jackson. This being one of the few good decisions the organization has made as of late. Many expect the Browns and Johnny Manziel to part ways. Here's to another fresh start.

3. San Diego Chargers- Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame

No change. San Diego started 6 different players at the left tackle position. They invested heavy on the O-line, but to no avail. Here is some stability.

4. Dallas Cowboys- Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State

The Cowboys have a serious cornerback issue with Claiborne most likely gone and Scandrick coming back from a serious knee injury. The best pass-rusher in the draft falls to the 'Boys here. Steal.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars- Deforest Buckner, DT, Oregon

Chris Clemons and Andre Branch are not expected to be back next year. Former 3rd overall pick Dante Fowler Jr. will be playing for the first time. Pairing these two together could lead to trouble for the AFC South. 

6. Baltimore Ravens- Jalen Ramsey, CB, Florida State

The Raven's secondary was plain bad in 2015. This pick will help improve the defense that gave up 30 passing touchdowns and recorded just 6 interceptions. Both franchise worsts.

7. San Francisco 49ers- Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss

Treadwell makes a leap into the top 10. Leaping is what he is known to do anyways. San Fran' has a lot of young talented players. This addition would really help the team and which ever QB gets the starting nod.

8. Miami Dolphins- Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
The Miami linebacking core could not stop the run in 2015, which resulted in a run defense that ranked 28th in the NFL. We know about Jack's health concern. Yet, its worth the risk.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida

No change. This would be a welcomed sight for the secondary. Check our Sunday Spotlight for a quick report on Hargreaves.

10. New York Giants- Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
There are many routes this Giant team could go down. From corner, to linebacker, or even safety. However, a pass-rusher should be priority here. Watch out for Ogbah here as well.

11. Chicago Bears- Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama
Chicago did not have a single player with a double-digit sack total. A linebacker along side Pernell Mcphee will help build a formidable front seven.

12. New Orleans Saints- Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Oregon State

Stephone Anthony was a solid pick, even If this defense played horrible in 2015. A pass-rusher to pair with DE Cameron Jordan will help this team. The defense cannot get any worse.

13. Philadelphia Eagles- Jack Conklin, OL, Michigan State.
This would not be a tough decision had Chip Kelly still been coaching this team. Quarterback would have been a go here. Now, with Doug Pederson as head coach, the Eagles should stay with Bradford and add some depth to the offensive line. Jason Peters is 34 years old.

14. Oakland Raiders- Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson
Charles Woodson is gone after a terrific parting year in 2015. Alexander takes a stumble here because of his hamstring injury suffered in the Nat'l Championship game.

15. Los Angeles Rams- Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State. 

No change, besides the L.A. part. There are talks Robert Griffin III or Johnny Manziel could get interest from L.A. Those guys are nothing but risks. The Rams are a quarterback away from being a real contender.

16. Detroit Lions- A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama
The days of Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh wrecking havoc in the interior are far far gone. A'Shawn Robinson will try to bring that back in Detroit.

17. Atlanta Falcons- Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Ole Miss
A top 5 or even 3 talent here. We have seen how off-field issues can effect ones career. That is why Nkemdiche has slipped so far. If the Falcons can wrap this guy up in football, they'll have a real star.

18. Indianapolis Colts- Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State
No brainer here. The Colts need to do whatever they can to keep Andrew Luck upright. Decker, a Big Ten product, will do what he can to ensure that happens.

19. Buffalo Bills- Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson
If the Bills are smart, they will part ways with Mario Williams and resign Cordy Glenn. Dodd, coming off a dominant performance in the Nat'l Championship will be the second Clemson DE taken in the first round.

20. New York Jets- Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame
The perfect player-team combination so far. The Jets are in dire need for linebackers. Demario Davis is expected to walk and Calvin Pace is expected to retire. Smith is another top 5 talent. Biggest steal thus far.

21. Washington Redskins- Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama

The third Alabama defender selected thus far. The Redskins passed on Leonard Williams last year and decided to beef up their offensive line. They will not pass this year.

22. Houston Texans- Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis
Whether its Goff, Lynch, or Wentz here at 22, the Texans HAVE to develop a young quarterback if they ever want to win a playoff game in the future. Hoyer clearly won't get it done.

23. Minnesota Vikings- Josh Doctson, WR, TCU
Nothing changing here. Doctson, a large target, along side young talent Stefon Diggs will give the Viking offense a much needed boost.

24. Cincinnati Bengals- Darron Lee, LB, Ohio State
Here is a guy who is flying up the draft boards. A highly productive player added to a defense who may be losing there linebacking core. Rey and Lamur are scheduled to hit free agency, and Burfict will be gone for the first 3 games.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers- Kendall Fuller, CB, Virgina Tech
The Steelers are desperate for some length and athleticism in the secondary. They will get that with Fuller, who has the potential to be a shut-down corner.

26. Seattle Seahawks- Vadal Alexander, OL, LSU
We have seen how well Russell Wilson can play when he has some solid lineman play. Alexander will fill in where impending free agents Sweezy and Okung have left off.

27. Green Bay Packers- Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama
This may be considered another steal with Reed at 27. B.J. Raji is scheduled to hit the market in 2016. He is also turning 30 and hasn't produced on the same level Green Bay has been used to. Reed is a good fit.

28. Kansas City Chiefs-Tre'Davius White, CB, LSU
The Chiefs go corner for back to back years. They have absolutely no depth outside of Smith and Peters. Sean Smith could also leave in free-agency. You cannot win the NFL with just one solid corner.

29. Denver Broncos- Ezekiel Elliot, RB, Ohio State
No change. An electrifying runningback is what Denver needs, no matter who is under center in 2016. The running game in Denver was inconsistent through 2015.

30. Arizona Cardinals- Leonard Floyd, OLB, Georgia

The Cardinals cannot move forward with Dwight Freeney in 2016 despite his productiveness at this age. They could use a young pass-rusher, which is the theme of this first round.

31. Carolina Panthers- Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor
Carolina will not get away with playing mediocre receivers. Kelvin Benjamin will be back and presumably healthy, but adding Coleman can take this offense to a place it has not been in a while.

The NBA for years have graced us with a plethora of unique characters. More often than not these unique character also happened to be very unique talents. Trash-talking has been a commodity in all sports, and although it has digressed a little bit over the years there are still some trash talkers now that warrant a spot on the All-NBA Trash Talk team.

PG. Gary Payton



“Man, you won’t even be in the league next year.”- Payton to Jamie Feick

The Glove was one of the most aggressive point guards to ever play the position. He was so so ruthless and taunting with his play which is part of the reason why he is 4th all time in steals. If you ever watch him play, Payton would always be in the ear of the opposing guard, daring him to make a move where he knows they’re most uncomfortable. Gary Payton’s vintage clap in the face would always grind the gears of the opponent and throw them off their rhythm. What was so special about Payton was his short-term memory, in which he always hounded you even if he was getting beat and led to some great defensive plays in big moments. Payton didn’t shy always from big names either, as he always butted heads with the likes of Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan.

“You got no chance today and you never will” - Jordan to Barkley

The Jumpman himself is the greatest player of all-time, so it only makes sense that humility would be foreign to him. Jordan always let his play do the talking, but talking trash was always in his repertoire since his rookie season. From shooting free throws with his eyes close, to degrading other players, to the vintage shoulder shrug and tongue out, Jordan always made his presence known to everybody he was playing against. One game he actually commentated exactly what he was going to do to his former teammate Nick Anderson, and did it, ““I’m coming down. I’m going to dribble it between my legs twice. I’m going to pump fake and then I’m going to shoot a jumper. And then I’m going to look at you. And that’s exactly what he did.” Being the ultimate demoralizer that Jordan was, he always made it a goal to degrade his opposition, and he was the best at it.

SF. Matt Barnes



“Suck my d---, b----” - Barnes to James Harden’s mom

Matt Barnes won’t be working for Poland Spring anytime soon, because his filter seems to be non-existent. Barnes is one of the biggest instigators the league has ever seen and often receives criticism from fans for being a “fake tough guy”. He often played the role of enforcer, if you’re familiar with hockey the enforcer is the designated fighter of the team to provide a spark. His trash talk wasn’t necessarily about basketball more so than it was about ego, as he wasn’t the greatest player to ever grace an NBA court. Nonetheless, Barnes was extremely effective at getting under player’s skins and forcing altercation.

“Can I rub through your hair like a girl or something” - Garnett to Joakim Noah

Sure KG is one of the greatest power forwards to ever play this game, and although he didn’t go to college, he would have earned a degree in psychology. The Big Ticket was commander in chief of psychological warfare as he always got in the heads of his opponents. Paul Pierce recalls a time where Garnett crushed Noah’s heart and dreams, “ I remember Noah looked up to KG. He was like, 'Man, KG, I had your poster on my wall, I looked up to you, man.' And then [Garnett] just said something like that, and was like 'F--- you, Noah’.” said the Truth. I’m sure everyone remembers the famous fruity pebbles comment on Carmelo Anthony’s wife LaLa that made Melo so enraged that he went looking for KG after the game to fight him. That was just one example of the great trash talking artist. Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat recalled a trash talk story, saying, “ He got me all off my game. He scored, like, four times in a row on me in the crunch. And I was so embarrassed and so upset, and he got in my head. Ever since that day, I never said anything else."

“F--- you, you still a b---- tho.” - Noah to LeBron James

Joakim Noah doesn’t like Lebron James. Joakim Noah doesn’t like Cleveland. We’ve been witnessing this feud for several years now, since LeBron’s first tenure with the Cavs, and then to the Heat. Noah’s frustration probably comes from the four times that Lebron’s team sent the Bulls home packing, as LeBron is 4-0 against Chicago in the playoffs. But nonetheless, it’s entertaining to see Noah and his energetic clapping every time the Cavs seem to be flummoxed, even if it’s in precarious situations But still, he is the only person to talk down on LeBron on and off the court, so kudos for Noah trying to stir things up in today’s Charmin-like NBA.

The Sunday Spotlight: Vernon Hargreaves

Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida, 5-11, 198lbs, Junior

Pros:

Man Coverage: Hargreaves is this draft class' top man coverage corner. To be a true shut-down cornerback, the ability to pick a receiver and completely blanket them is a must. Hargreaves boasts sound athleticism that lets him stick with most receivers, big or small. He has all the essentials to play man. Quick fluid hips that let him transition to cover streaks or deep routes. 

Ball Skills: Coupled with said athleticism, comes his tremendous ball skills. Has a good set of paws. At just 5-11, he is able to battle for the ball at its highest point with any receiver. Tied for the team lead with 4 interceptions on the year. He is a return specialist on special teams, which has helped him return many interceptions for big returns. 

Physicality: Hargreaves is not one to shy away from a battle. He sticks his nose in many scraps through out the game. He is a skilled 1-on-1 open-field tackler. He plays with a confidence needed in the NFL.

Cons:

Motor- The corner tends to take plays off from time to time, much to the frustration of his coaches. On numerous occasions, Hargreaves has been seen not pursuing backside runs. There is sometimes a lack of effort which may actually encourage NFL coaches to get there hands on him, because he still produces so much, even while taking plays off.

Discipline- We talked about how athletic and aggressive Hargreaves can be. Sometimes, these traits can get to his head. He trusts his speed and athleticism too much. He will often jump routes when no play on the ball was possible. He tends to over pursue tackles, and get get shook by double moves. A real problem may exist here with his giving up of big plays so often. 

Pro Comparison- The popular pick as to who Hargreaves resembles is former Florida CB Joe Haden. I see this to be true but not as of late. Early in Haden's career, he played with great technique and sound footwork. In 2015, and 2014, Haden began to lose what was his strength. However, these two corners share a similar build and similar aggressiveness that is beloved by there respective coaches. Another solid comparison would be to Baltimore's Jimmy Smith. Smith had a solid 2015 season and has tremendous upside.

NBA MVP Ladder

 

1. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

Steph Curry has been a highlight reel this year and an absolute nightmare for opposing point guards. He scored 38 points twice this week against Denver and Detroit but unfortunately both were in losing efforts. He has 17 games this season with 30+ points and is leading the league in points per game, averaging 29.9 on 50% shooting. Last years MVP looks even better than last year and as long as he can stay healthy it doesn't look like any is gonna stop him from hoisting another MVP trophy come May.

2. Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio Spurs

"The Claw" as some people would like to call him has taken his game to another level. We knew he was a great defender when he came to the league. Coming in to his rookie year he didn't have much of a jump shot but credit to his work ethic and the great coaching staff of the Spurs, he now has a lethal jump shot leading the league in 3 point percentage shooting 48.3%. With the evolution of his offensive game and the ability to shut down an opposing teams best player, he has become one of, if not the best two player in the game today.

3.Lebron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

This has been another typical Lebron James season.What more can you say about arguably the best player in the game.  Averaging 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists we've come accustomed to his greatness. With Kyrie back in the fold they look to geared up for a deep playoff run and with the king at the top of his game there's nobody in the east that can stop them from making back to back appearance's in the finals.

4. Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder

Kevin Durant is averaging 26.5 points, 7.7 reb and 4.4 assists. Besides missing a few games earlier in the month with a toe injury he has been able to stay healthy and get back to his MVP form. He's fallen under the radar in a conference with the Warriors and Spurs, but it is a joy to have him back at his elite level.

5. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

The fiery competitiveness that we all know and love from Westbrook can sometimes get a little out of hand but he plays so hard and you never want to tell a player like him to tune it down, but would like him to be a little smarter. After 2 quick technicals he only saw 14 minutes, but what you love about him so much is that it he doesn't let it affect him as we saw on display Friday night when it only took him 3 quarters to record his 4th triple double of the season.

6. Jimmy Butler, Chicago Bulls

Jimmy Butler has put the team on his back lately. carrying the load for the team that is currently 3rd in the eastern conference. He's been the iron man on this team, he is the only Bulls player to play and start every game this season. He's been on fire this past month posting numbers of 28 6 and 6 in the month of January.

7. Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors

The evolution of Draymond Green has been fun to watch. The former second round pick has burst on to the scene this year and has been the best player on the Warriors not named Steph Curry. His value to this team became evident when he took a day off and rested against the Denver Nuggets resulting in there 3rd loss of the season at the time. This level of production out a power forward is something we don't often see and it has been special to watch.

8. James Harden, Houston Rockets

The team that was 2nd in the western conference last year and in the western conference finals got off to a rough start. They're nowhere near what they were last year but they're making strides and that is because of the play of James Harden. While he's been balling all year, questions of his leadership arose when the team started off bad. Before a bad lost to Cleavland at home they went on a five game win streak due to in large part James Hardens 27 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists during the streak.

9. Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers

Chris Paul has been steadying the ship while Blake Griffin and Deandre Jordan have been out dealing with injuries. With a starting front court of Paul Pierce, Luc Mbah a Moute, and Cole Aldrich, they have won 9 of their last 10 games. Chris Paul has stepped his game up averaging 20 points and almost 13 assist in the month of January.

10. Paul George, Indiana Pacers

Paul George has been one of the best stories in NBA this year. Coming off the terrible leg injury 2 summers ago. He obviously didn't look like himself when he decided to come back at the end of last season, but with those few games and a  full off season to get his legs under him, he is back to playing the elite level of basketball we are used to and looks even better posting career highs in points (24) and rebounds (7.5)

How Good is Marcus Peters?

This year has been nothing short of amazing for Marcus Peters. Week after week he has shown us why he's the best Cornerback in the 2015 NFL draft class. So let's  just take a step back to take a look at his journey to stardom. He was a standout player at The University of Washington, who showed promise and natural ball skills. As time progressed it was clear he had the talent to play at the next level. He hit a slight bump in the road when he was dismissed off of the team for disciplinary issues. As a result his draft stock fell, which caused him to be the 3rd Cornerback to be drafted in the 2015 NFL draft.

The teams who passed on him made an enormous mistake. Marcus Peters is by far the best defensive rookie this year, even with the other tremendous players in his draft class. The position that he plays is such a hot commodity in the NFL, every team needs a corner that they can depend on week in and week out. Marcus is isolated every week against the best wide receiver. He was challenged very early by all quarterbacks he faced for the simple fact of him being a rookie. As a result of him being tested, he obtained a NFL rookie record of 8 interceptions and led the NFL in passes defensed and targeted plays.

He, like any other player in the NFL has weaknesses. His Kryptonite is fast shifty receivers who sometimes gives him trouble on the line when going for short quick routes like slants. The good thing about Marcus is, he has the ability to adjust during the game, which is going to make him great. This gives him an edge and he sets himself apart from the other players in his class because of this. His development of a corner is impressive because swiftly. Throughout the first half of the season he gave up 8 touchdowns, which isn't great for a corner, but after that week he has only allowed one touchdown, this really shows the quick adjustments he made mid season to make him a threat to Quarterbacks of all schemes.

He is an impulsive corner who thrives in man to man coverage, he has the talent to be the best corner in the league if he continues to work on his craft. As a rookie he made the Pro Bowl and Second team All-Pro, which is just ridiculous when you look at it. The Feats this young star has accomplished shouldn't be taken lightly as he is just beginning his stint toward greatness. The secondary in which he is apart of is among the best in the league if not the best in the league, and they will nurture him into the superstar he deserves to be. Quarterbacks should watch out because he just bought an island and it isn't going up for foreclosure anytime soon.

Exploring the Racial Hypocrisy in the NFL

In a Week 10 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, QB Cam Newton ran in a one-yard touchdown to seal a 27-10 victory over said Titans, much to the displeasure of Tennessee fans and players.

By now, we should all be familiar with the written letter a frustrated Tennessee mother and fan wrote in discussing her displeasure with the QB's moves. Here is the full note written by the mother to Cam Newton after the loss.

Dear Mr. Newton,

Congratulations on your win in Nashville today. Our team played well, but yours played better. Kudos to the Panthers organization.

That game happened to be my nine year old daughter’s first live NFL experience. She was surprised to see so many Panthers’ fans sitting in our section of the stadium; that doesn’t happen much at fourth grade football games. And she was excited we were near the end zone, so we would be close to the “action,” particularly in the second half.  Because of where we sat, we had a close up view of your conduct in the fourth quarter. The chest puffs. The pelvic thrusts. The arrogant struts and the ‘in your face’ taunting of both the Titans’ players and fans. We saw it all.

I refuse to believe you don’t realize you are a role model. You are paid millions of dollars every week to play hard and be a leader. In the off season you’re expected to make appearances, support charities, and inspire young kids to pursue your sport and all sports. With everything the NFL has gone through in recent years, I’m confident they have advised that you are, by virtue of your position and career choice, a role model.

And because you are a role model, your behavior brought out like behavior in the stands. Some of the Panthers fans in our section began taunting the hometown fans. Many Titans fans booed you, a few offering instructive, but not necessarily family friendly, suggestions as to how you might change your behavior.

My daughter sensed the change immediately – and started asking questions. Won’t he get in trouble for doing that? Is he trying to make people mad? Do you think he knows he looks like a spoiled brat?

I didn’t have great answers for her, and honestly, in an effort to minimize your negative impact and what was otherwise a really fun day, I redirected her attention to the cheerleaders and mascot.

I could tell she was still thinking about it as we boarded a shuttle back to our car. “I guess he doesn’t have kids or a Mom at home watching the game,” she added.

I don’t know about your family life Mr. Newton, but I think I’m safe in saying thousands of kids watch you every week. You have amazing talent and an incredible platform to be a role model for them. Unfortunately, what you modeled for them today was egotism, arrogance and poor sportsmanship.

Is that what your coaches and mentors modeled for you, Mr. Newton?"

I personally don't have much of a problem with what this woman said, besides the fact that she says Newton displayed "poor sportsmanship." The same linebacker who had a problem with Newton had a sack celebration of his own earlier in the game. She forgot to shield her kid's eyes from that, though. Anyways, she has a small point. There comes a point in time where too much may be too much. As far as NFL players celebrating goes, there are two sides, which one you take is up to you. There is one side, the side Cam Newton appears to be on, that this sport they are playing is a GAME. Games are meant to be played and thus, having fun is allowed. The other side of needs to get realized. These players earn millions to play said GAME. With those earnings should come some responsibility and professionalism. With the NFL spotlight never being brighter than it is today, these players need to realize they are role models to young kids in society. Yet, what is so wrong with Newton telling kids to have fun? His dancing should show children who watch him that having fun is the main objective of this sport. Through all the millions, endorsements, championship wins or losses, the main objective is to have fun.

Here is where my problem comes in. 

Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce scored a touchdown and ensued a celebration similar to Newton's in nature. Before we get into what is upsetting, let me first say that I am on the side of having fun. I have zero problem with any player, white, black, hispanic, or asian, celebrating. To me, neither of these celebrations deserved an outcry. However, one did. Guess which one? Here's where the outrage should be targeted. The hypocrisy fans around the NFL show toward celebrations is disgusting and at times laughable. Kelce thrusted the air in a sexual manner. Where were the letters? Kelce ensued in arrogant struts? Where was the outrage then? For many of you, this was the first time you have seen this Kelce celebration. Those reasons are up to you to decide. Here is another example. 

Again, I have zero problem with Palmer on this one. Hell if I threw the laser of a pass he did to extend the lead against the Seahawks, who knows what I would do. My problem lies with the hypocrisy. On this celebration, the NFL promptly fined Palmer $11,576.Do you want to know what fans had to say about this obvious and egotistical celebration? They started a "Thrust Fund". A goddamn "Thrust Fund".  A total of 223 people donated a total of 2,000+ dollars to the Carson Palmer Thrust Fund. The proceeds were given to charity. No outrage, no half-hour segments on sports talk shows across America. Nothing. Palmer admitted to seeing some friends in the stands and he got excited. That is fine! These guys are humans, but the fact that no backlash occurred for either of these events has to get you wondering. 

This past weekend, we all witnessed the violent and flat-out dirty hits laid on various Steeler players by linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Burfict has numerous accounts of dirty play throughout his NFL and Collegiate careers. Whether its twisting ankles, knocking over cameras, or hits to defensless receivers. Burfict did it all. Take it for what its worth, but Burfict's tackles have ended Leveon Bells' season, and have seriously injured Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown. Here is the vicious hit on said wideout, Antonio Brown.

The violent hit costed the Bengals 15 yards, and costed Burfict his first three games next year. All these penalties are much deserved. After the game, Burfict was the subject of name-calling throughout the country. Burfict was labelled a thug, and to be honest his actions may have proved that, despite this being his first suspension in the NFL

Now here is a play from yesterdays Divisional Playoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.

 

Amendola, a New England receiver with no real history of violent hits throughout his career, delivered this foul hit on Chiefs' safety Flemming. There will be no thug-labelling for Amendola. Why? Is it because he does not have a history of such dirty plays? Or because of the color of his skin?

The fact is, this is not a football problem. This is not an NFL problem. This is a societal problem. I am not naive and understand that racism will live on for some time now. However, that does not justify this hypocrisy amongst white and balck culture we are seeing from the fans. It starts and ends with us. Again, I have no problem with what players do today. It is all fun and games and any player, no matter of color, should be allowed to express themselves in any manner they choose. When we start to discriminate is where I have to draw the line.
