Empty Nets

The Nets situation couldn't be any worse than it is right now. 3 years ago the Nets had championship aspirations with Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez. While the team did make the playoffs both years with that roster, the team fell very short of expectations and it has left the franchise in a flux. They don't know if they want to rebuild or try to make the playoffs. With the playoffs completely out the question with a 10-28 record, you would think the Nets would be looking forward to a high lottery pick, but no, that pick belongs to the Celtics thanks to the blockbuster trade in 2013 that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Brooklyn for 3 first round picks (2014,2016,2018) and the right to swap first round picks in 2017. So there's not a lot opportunity to bring in young talent and with how bad the team is doing they are not a destination to lure big time free agents in.

The Nets are in a fluster and don't seem like they are going to get out of it anytime soon. With all the changes happening inside the organization now that general manager Billy King has been demoted and the firing of head coach Lionel Hollins. Nets now have had 5 head coaches since owner Mikhail Prokhorov bought the team in 2010. With all the inconsistencies with coaching and front office it has lead to the inconsistencies on the court.

Tony Brown has stepped in for Hollins. Whether the team decides to keep him or move forward at the end of the season the team doesn't have much to work with. Jarret Jack will be coming off a torn ACL. Rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson looks like a promising young player if he can ever get a jump shot. Joe Johnson is on the downside of his career and hasn't been productive player in a while but the Nets can't move him because of his contract. You know your team needs a major overhaul when Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young are the "building blocks" of this team.

Prokhorov threw this teams future away when he tried to build a contender by trading multiple first round picks for Future Hall of Famers past their primes. The Nets will not have complete control over a first round pick until 2019 and with the talent on this team they're going to be at the bottom of the standings for a while. That's certainly not a mess anyone is going to be eager to come in and clean up. At this point all the team can do is be patient and try to make some short term improvements that will hopefully lead to long term success.
